Attorney Shawn B. Hamp just donated $2,400 to fund MCC scholarships that will help students pursuing careers in the legal profession.

The money will fund two scholarships.  The first is called the Law Offices of Shawn B. Hamp Criminal Justice Scholarship.  The second is the Law Offices of Shawn B. Hamp Paralegal Scholarship.

Over the past three years Hamp has funded the scholarships with a total of $4,800.

“This is one small step for our law firm to give back and help our community,” said Hamp.  “These scholarships help students learn about the legal justice system so that they can get careers right away in our community or pursue higher educational degrees in the future.”

Hamp started his career as an attorney with the Mohave County Attorney’s Office in April of 2000.  He moved from the Phoenix-metro area and decided Mohave County is where he wanted to stay.  “I was drawn to the beauty of the high desert and the recreational amenities by living in the tri-state area,” he said.

Hamp started his own a successful private practice in 2007.  The Law Offices of Shawn B. Hamp now offer legal services throughout the county, as well as in Prescott.  He has seen the need for quality professionals in the legal field,  he started the scholarships to help.

“There are a lot of different roles in the legal justice system such as paralegals, court clerks, legal assistants, police officers, corrections officers, probation officers, and that’s why we helped establish two scholarships for paralegals and administration of justice students to fulfill these needs.”

The Mohave Community College Foundation manages and distributes the scholarships.

“Scholarships like Shawn’s are so important to our students at MCC,” said MCC Foundation Executive Director Carrie Kelly. “Most of our students have a financial need and we don’t have as many scholarships that are designated for our students who want to enter the legal field, which makes Shawn’s scholarship all the more important for our community.”

Last year, MCC students received more than 540 scholarships from the Foundation and community organizations, providing more than $400,000 in financial support to local students.
