3 MCC workforce students selected for All-Arizona Academic Team and to compete for Phi Theta Kappa scholarships.
MOHAVE COUNTY – Three Mohave Community College students have been selected to be a part of the All-Arizona Academic team in the workforce category. Students selected are Justine Melendrez (Bullhead Campus), Jacquelyn Ann Mycek Romero (Online) and July Arias (Bullhead Campus).
Students will now be placed in competition for the All-USA Academic Team, Coca-Cola Academic Team and the New Century WORKFORCE Pathway Scholarship Awards through Phi Theta Kappa.
Justine Melendrez-Bullhead Campus
Melendrez is a Dental Hygiene student at MCC. She hopes to one day work for a dental office and branch out to start helping her local community. Melendrez hopes to continue her education in the future by working towards a bachelor’s degree in public health and use her dental hygiene knowledge to help low-income families.
MCC’s Dental Hygiene program is designed to prepare students to take national and regional licensing exams to prepare them to enter the workforce after graduation.
She decided to attend MCC because the colleges in Las Vegas weren’t offering dental hygiene at the time. To attend the dental program, she commutes to and from Las Vegas on the weekends and stays in Bullhead during the week. Melendrez has found success at MCC and being recognized for this award has made her hard work pay off.
“It was very surprising to me to be selected and recognized,” Melendrez said. “I have worked very hard to be where I am today and sacrificed a bunch, so a positive recognition is very rewarding.”
She’s a first-generation student, meaning she’s the first in her family to attend a higher education institution. Her family and friends have been her support system while being away at school. On her spare time, she spends all her time with her two children.
JacquelynAnn Mycek Romero- Online
Romero is a Substance Abuse and Counseling student. Her career goal is to work for a local agency to assist as many people as possible in her community. After MCC, she hopes to work her way up to a leadership role at a local agency.
MCC’s Substance Abuse and Counseling program is self-paced which means students have the opportunity to earn their degree or certificate sooner than in a typical classroom setting.
Romero decided to attend MCC because she felt she wanted more in life and wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. She was shocked to have received the news about the award and thought she wasn’t going to receive it.
“It feels amazing to be recognized for my outstanding achievement,” Romero said. “I worked hard and committed everything I had for this.”
MCC has helped her gain her confidence to pursue a career choice. She also utilizes the Student Success Center on the Kingman campus.
She said the ladies at the front desk always make her feel welcomed and have been helpful throughout her educational journey.
She’s a first-generation student, meaning she’s the first in her family to attend a college or university. Romero is a Lake Havasu High School graduate and during her spare time she enjoys photography, painting, and scrapbooking.
